A Ministry of Supply contract issued in the mid 1950s resulted in the unique Saro SR. 53 supersonic interceptor fighter, which incorporated a mixed powerplant consisting of an Armstrong Siddeley Viper turbojet mounted above a liquid propellant de Havilland Spectre rocket motor.
