It was his first major commission for a public institution, for which he made several hundred preparatory drawings and paintings over multiple years. It depicts a glowing sunrise over a rocky archipelago off the Nordic coast. Munch himself described the origin: "I saw the sun rise up above the cliffs I painted the sun."
