Nebula season is upon us so its time to start dusting off the equipment and honing our skills. Atmospheric conditions aren’t great with high temperatures, high humidity, some Saharan dust, and a non-trivial amount of wildfire smoke as we get every year. The Veil Nebula is a convenient target for me, being in the north allows me to pick it up early in the evening and image it until about 4:00am. Then my neighbor’s tree interferes with my photons. The top version is RGB mapped to Hydrogen and Oxygen. The lower version is using the Hubble palette, made famous by the Hubble Space Telescope, where Sulphur is red, Hydrogen is green, and Oxygen is blue. Most nebulae are very heavy in Hydrogen so the dominant color is often green.
